Search has changed more in two years than in the previous ten. Customers increasingly skip Google and ask an AI assistant directly — “What's the best performance marketing agency?” — expecting one finished answer with brand names. If the AI doesn't mention you in that answer, for that customer you effectively don't exist. This is a complete, practical playbook for getting into the answers of ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.

Why being in AI answers matters

A classic search result offers ten links and the user chooses. An AI engine offers one synthesized answer and cites a handful of sources. Attention concentrates dramatically: being cited means being recommended at the exact moment of decision. On top of that, zero-click queries keep rising — the user gets the answer and never clicks through, so the only way to reach them is to be inside that answer.

Optimizing for this world is called GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) or AEO (Answer Engine Optimization). It's not a replacement for SEO — it's the next layer. Good SEO and good GEO share the same foundation (high-quality, trustworthy, well-structured content), but GEO emphasizes things classic SEO never focused on.

How AI engines decide who to cite

AI models don't read your site like a human. Given a query, they look for passages they can easily extract, verify and attribute to a brand. They rely mainly on these signals:

  • A clear, self-contained answer — a passage that answers a specific question on its own, without reading the rest of the page.
  • Entities and clarity — the model must be sure which brand, product and field you mean, and able to connect them.
  • Authority and consistency — other trustworthy sources mention you and your claims don't contradict across your site.
  • Freshness — for many queries, models favour recently updated content.
  • Structure — headings, lists, tables and structured data make it easy for a machine to navigate.

Six pillars of GEO: how to get into the answers

1. Answer immediately and directly

Every key page and article should state the most important answer in the first two or three sentences — no warm-up. AI models love citable passages: short, confident, factual. Only then expand the context. The same applies to definitions: “GEO is optimizing content so generative AI search engines cite it.” is exactly the kind of sentence a model happily repeats.

2. Write in questions and answers

People ask AI in natural language and in questions. When your site has sections and headings phrased as real questions (with a clear answer right below), you increase the odds the model finds an exact match. A FAQ section with well-written answers is one of the most effective GEO formats there is.

3. Strengthen entities and authority

Make sure the model is confident about who you are. A consistent brand name, a clear description of what you do and for whom, links to verifiable profiles and mentions in trustworthy sources all help the model cite you safely. Mentions and links from relevant sites work in GEO much like backlinks in SEO.

4. Structure for machines and humans

A logical heading hierarchy, bullet lists for enumerations, tables for comparisons and structured data (schema.org — Article, FAQPage, Organization) give the model a map of your content. The easier it is to extract facts, the more likely it uses them.

5. Deliver facts, not fluff

Concrete numbers, definitions, procedures and examples are citable. Marketing fluff is not. Review every page by asking: “What here could an AI quote directly as an answer?” If nothing, rewrite it.

6. Keep content fresh

Stale content loses ground even in classic SEO; in GEO that's doubly true. Regularly updating key pages and steadily adding content keeps your brand in the game.

The technical foundation: let AI crawlers in

The best content is worthless if AI can't reach it. Check that:

  • content is in HTML, not hidden behind a click or heavy JavaScript a crawler won't run,
  • robots.txt doesn't needlessly block AI crawlers (e.g. GPTBot, PerplexityBot) if you want to be cited,
  • pages are fast and available and you have a valid sitemap,
  • key facts live in text, not only inside an image.

How to measure whether AI cites you

GEO is measurable, just differently from Google rankings. Do this:

  1. Build a list of real queries you want to be the answer to.
  2. Regularly run them through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini and track whether and how you're mentioned.
  3. Watch referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics — it's becoming measurable.
  4. Note which topics competitors beat you on and fill the missing content.

Where to start

You don't have to rebuild your whole site overnight. Pick the five most important queries in your field, give each a page or section with a clear answer up front, add FAQ and structured data — and measure. GEO is a marathon, not a sprint, but whoever starts now gains a lead that later gets expensive to close. At eneVIBE we build exactly this kind of content as part of our content production: from topic strategy through writing to structured data and mention tracking.
